Themis the Goddess of Justice

The Story

What if the goddess of justice came down to Earth - and no one believed her?

Themis, the Greek goddess of divine law and order, descends from Olympus after a rupture with her drunk husband,  Zeus. When her sculpture awakens in New York City, we discover she was summoned by Grace Goldberg-  a young college graduate navigating a public rape trial, searching for someone who will finally tell the truth.

Together, Themis and Grace go on a journey to ask the questions that don't have easy answers: What is justice? Who is it for? And what do we stand for when the systems meant to protect us fail? Guided by a "Greek" chorus that breaks the fourth wall and sings directly to the audience, Themis blends myth and modernity, original music and dance, to tell a story that is both ancient and urgent.

The Vision

Themis is a musical with something to say. Created through a female gaze, it centers the experiences of women, survivors, and anyone who has ever been told their truth isn't enough. It draws on the long tradition of musicals that use the stage as a space for social reckoning - from Hair to Rent - while forging its own voice through original music, live performance, and community dialogue.

This is not a show that ends when the curtain falls. Each performance is designed to open a conversation, not close one.

The Team

Themis is created by Noa Shapira, strategic director of Artists Amongst Us, interdisciplinary performing artist, and survivor. The production brings together a multicultural creative ensemble, including:

  • Ronan Viard -  Director, with 20+ years of international theater experience

  • Kwami Barnett -  Musical Director, composer, and performer

  • Adrienne Asterita -  Assistant Director and audience engagement lead

  • Cynthia Giannini - Choreographer and Artistic Advisor

  • Emy McGuire -  Musical Collaborator and songwriter

  • Zerek Dodson -  Pianist, Carnegie Hall performer, and doctoral candidate

Community at the Center

Themis is being developed in partnership with The Blue Bench and the Colorado Coalition Against Sexual Assault. As the project develops and secures funding, we aim to hold open-to-the-public rehearsals, followed by trauma-informed Q&As - creating space for honest, supported conversations about sexual violence, justice, and the power of art to hold both.

Themis: The Goddess of Justice is currently in development with Artists Amongst Us. A full-scale premiere is envisioned for 2028.
